NHRA Sportsman at the Gatornationals

Three Florida racers visited the winner’s circle as Gary Williams, Jacksonville Beach, Fla., and John Taylor, Naples, Fla., each grabbed their first NHRA national event win while Steve Cohen, Trilby, Fla., bagged his 19th.  Williams won on a double breakout with Raymond Miller, Spring Hill, Fla., in Super Comp as both drivers had great reaction times but Williams was better at the finish line.  Taylor was better at both ends of the track in Super Gas over John Labbous Jr., White House, Tenn., and Cohen outran Larry Strickland, Oxford, Fla., in Top Dragster posting a run of 6.723 seconds at 192.08 mph in his ’11 dragster.

Rounding out the winners were Brad Zaskowski and Gene Jordan in Super Stock and Stock respectively. Zaskowski, Belding, Mich., won over Joe Tysinger, Wrightsville, Beach, N.C., for his fifth national event win and Jordan, Reidsville, N.C., won against Mickey Whaley, in his ’69 Camaro.

Top Alcohol Funny Car: Dan Pomponio, Chevy Monte Carlo, 5.662, 258.52  def. Dale Brand, Monte Carlo, foul.
